Let's Talk About Drops Yarn
Have you heard of this yarn company before? Have you used any of their yarns or maybe knit or crocheted any of their patterns? Maybe you have questions about them? Follow along and hopefully I'll provide you with some insight as to what this company is all about.
Garn Studio, which manufactures Drops Yarn, is located in Oslo, Norway and has been around since the 1980s. They offer a wide range of yarn choices in both animal and plant bases in an amazing range of colours and weights. They offer so many yarns, that I'm sure you will be able to find the perfect yarn for any project you are looking to make!
I decided to carry Drops Yarn in the store after reading all about their commitment to animal welfare and environmental standards. They include both the country of origin as well as the country of manufacture on all their yarns to assist in traceability.
From their website:
DROPS Design has made a list of commitments (Code of Conduct) to be followed by suppliers, which incorporate international standards for human rights, employment rights, environmental protection, animal welfare and anti-corruption. These principals are based on the United Nations and International Labour Organisation’s conventions and are our minimum standard. All our suppliers have signed and committed to follow our Code of Conduct.
Their Yarns
Drops Yarn groups their various yarns into weight categories.
A = sport, lace, fingering
B = DK, worsted
C = aran, worsted
D = chunky
E = super bulky
F = super bulk, jumbo
Within each grouping, you will find a variety of yarns made with different compositions.
Their Patterns
In addition to all the wonderful yarns that they produce, Garn Studio offers an amazing range of FREE patterns on their website. That's right, free! They have over 11,612 patterns available. One of the nice features of their patterns, is they have a suggested yarn (of course), but you also have the ability to pick a different yarn based on the Group listed above.
Say you wanted to knit a sweater and the pattern calls for aran, worsted weight yarn. You will notice in the pattern what yarn group you need so if you don't have that exact yarn, you can check the group to see what other yarns will work!
Have a look at this screen shot from one of their many patterns. You will see that it calls for two yarns from Group A or one yarn from Group C.
How handy is that? Maybe you don't like the feel of alpaca yarn but like the design. You can see what other yarns are available in that group and find the composition you will enjoy.
If you haven't checked out Drops Yarn or the patterns at Garn Studio, I highly suggest you do. We carry a range of Drops Yarn here at The Wool Pirate. Have a look!
